Why cedar slabs are popular

Cedar offers vivid heartwood and light sapwood contrast, a distinct aroma, and natural durability for indoor and sheltered outdoor projects. It is also lighter and easier to handle than many hardwoods. For species details, the Wood Database is a helpful reference.

Aromatic with strong color contrast.
Naturally resistant to rot and insects.
Easy to work and sand.
Great for mantels and shelving.

How to choose a good cedar slab

Check knots for stability and cracks.
Expect bark pockets; plan for stabilization.
Confirm moisture content before finishing.
Inspect flatness across the full length.

Finishing and care notes

Cedar is soft and benefits from gentle handling and good sealing. A clear oil finish can deepen color without creating a heavy film. For high-traffic surfaces, consider a harder topcoat or a different species.

Kiln load policy

We handle large kiln loads only (2000 bd/ft minimum). Cedar must air-dry under cover for a few months before kiln scheduling. Wet wood ties up the kiln longer, raises energy use, and increases checking, so it is accepted only at a premium when schedules allow.
