Reclaimed wood guidance
Reclaimed wood Dallas Texas
Reclaimed wood adds character, but it needs careful inspection. Use these tips to choose stable boards and avoid metal damage or hidden defects.
Reclaimed wood inventory Reclaimed wood buying checks
- Scan for metal before cutting.
- Check for rot, insect damage, and soft spots.
- Ask about storage and moisture history.
How to evaluate reclaimed wood
Reclaimed boards can hide nails, staples, and old finishes. Inspect all faces, use a metal detector if possible, and ask about the source. Stable reclaimed wood should still be flat and sound at the core.
Use a metal detector or strong magnet.
Check for rot near ends and joints.
Ask about prior paint or chemical exposure.
Confirm moisture before final milling.
Common reclaimed wood uses
Accent walls and ceiling beams.
Table tops with character and patina.
Mantels and shelves with history.
Custom trim and architectural details.
Kiln load policy
We run large kiln loads only (2000 bd/ft minimum). Wood must air-dry under cover for a few months before kiln scheduling. Wet wood ties up the kiln, raises energy use, and increases checking, so it is accepted only at a premium when schedules allow.
