Cedar fence posts Texas

Cedar posts are popular for fences and ranch projects because of natural rot resistance. Use these tips to choose straight, durable posts and avoid early failure.

Cedar post selection tips
  • Prioritize heartwood and straight grain.
  • Check for cracks and excessive taper.
  • Call for bulk availability and pickup.

How to choose quality cedar fence posts

Look for straight, even taper and solid heartwood. Posts with heavy spiral grain or deep checks are more likely to split. Ask how the posts were stored and whether they were kept covered to limit surface checking.

Choose posts with tight, even growth rings.
Avoid loose knots near the ground line.
Check for deep end splits and soft spots.
Confirm length, diameter, and taper.

Installation tips that extend post life

Set posts below the frost line where applicable.
Use gravel at the base for drainage.
Seal cut ends after trimming.
Allow airflow around posts when stacking.

Kiln load policy

We run large kiln loads only (2000 bd/ft minimum). Wood must air-dry under cover for a few months before kiln scheduling. Wet wood ties up the kiln, raises energy use, and increases checking, so it is accepted only at a premium when schedules allow.
