Portable milling selection tips
  • Ask about max diameter and log length.
  • Confirm blade type and finish tolerance.
  • Plan for drying and storage right away.

How to pick a portable sawmill

Portable bandmills are the best fit for most residential logs. Compare setup needs, log handling, and how they price time vs. board footage. The Wood-Mizer Find a Local Sawyer directory is a good place to start. For oversized slabs, call us to see if an Alaskan mill cut is possible.

Inspect logs for metal and mud.
Ask how they handle defects and waste.
Confirm stacking and sticker guidance.

Kiln load policy

We run large kiln loads only (2000 bd/ft minimum). Wood must air-dry under cover for a few months before kiln scheduling. Wet wood ties up the kiln longer, raises energy use, and increases checking, so it is accepted only at a premium when schedules allow.
